Research: Garoto
Since 2013 I have been deeply researching the works of Aníbal Augusto Sadinha, a.k.a. Garoto (1915-1955). I have written a master thesis about him during my studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and since then I have engaged and tooked part a few important projects, aiming to spread his music around Brazil and the around the world. Garoto , one of the most respected Brazilian guitarist, multi instrumentalists and prolific composers has an immeasurable importance in the development of Brazilian music and deserves to be more studied, performed and heard of.

Along with researcher Jorge Mello and guitarist Domingos Teixeira, we released in 2017 this Songbook with 67 compositions by Garoto, full of rich information about his life and works. We spent approximately 3 years working on transcriptions of original manuscripts and recordings of Garoto's repertoire. We also worked on creating harmonizations for his compositions that had only a written melody, without any indication of chords or accompaniment. Beatriz Paes Leme, Paulo Aragão, and Marcílio Lopes collaborated in the final revisions. The book contains 67 choros by Garoto, including 14 unpublished ones, as well as a biographical summary, information about the compositions, a complete catalog of compositions organised by Jorge Mello, and further texts by Paulo Bellinatti and myself. With my piano-trio, Caixa Cubo, I released a CD in honor of Garoto, entitled “Enigma - A Música de Garoto“. Besides me my partners Noa Stroeter on bass and João Fideles on drums, the CD features my guests Nailor Proveta on clarinet, Toninho Ferragutti on accordion, Paulo Bellinatti on guitar and Zé Leônidas on vocals. The album presents some original arrangements for piano trio of some of his masterpieces for solo guitar, and it includes the first recording of some songs by Garoto that were part of the book Choros de Garoto like Fluminense and Tijuca Tênis.

In 2016 I worked both as musical director and pianist at the concert “100 Anos de Garoto“, which took place at Sesc Pinheiros, in São Paulo. The project was directed by Myriam Taubkin, and was idealized by us alongside with with Rafael Veríssimo and Lucas Nobile. This gathering brought together some of the most renowned Brazilian musicians together, such as Yamandu Costa, Guinga, Paulo Bellinatti, Israel de Almeida, and Isaias Bueno. Besides, some names of the new generation as the likes of Xênia França, Guilherme Held, and Caixa Cubo joined this musical celebration, to honor Garoto's 100th birthday.
